The Story Scout: Pt 1-Blacksburg, VA

Greetings from the Huckleberry Trail in Blacksburg, VA! I’m not presently in Blacksburg, but the photos are! :)

I’m a little behind on getting these posted/started. I’ve been doing some hiking on my travels, and I wanted to share those sights. The bulk of these posts will likely be photos. This particular hike was on May 12th, 2024. You see? I told you I was behind :) I didn’t initially have a way to track my progress, so I was just walking. Here’s a map of the area:

Huckleberry Trail Map

There’s a yellow circle that says ‘You are here,’ which is where I started. The walkable trail is green and I placed a red hash over the section that I traveled. I also put a few labels on the map. The ‘Cliff Faces’ and ‘Fields’ apply to the following photos:

Cliff Faces

Fields 1

Fields 2

You can’t really see it in the photos but the “grass” in these fields was around eighteen-inches high. With the wind steadily blowing, it all swayed like it was in a current… Well, I suppose it was; it just wasn’t water. :)

The ‘Cliff Faces’ were a nice stretch of walkway as well!

Side Trail 1

Side Trail 2

Obviously, not all of the trail was paved, or rather, not all of the accessible trail. This isn’t the main trail; it’s a side path. I didn’t mark it on the map because I couldn’t recall its precise location. I believe it was just past the ‘Cliff Faces.’ If you reference the bathroom icon on the map, I know I exited just above that icon. I’m guessing that stretch of trail was roughly .5 miles.

Outro:

All in all, I had a great hike. I drew a red arrow at my approximate turn around point. I didn’t initially know how to calculate my distance traveled, but I figured it out further down the trail. There happened to be stone markers along the sides. I think the first one I noticed said ‘2.0.’ Well, I saw them from that point forward. I noted the markers along the way back and it turned out that I walked around 12 miles. XD That doesn’t include side paths though.

It was a great day and I think I enjoyed the fields the most. Here are a few other photos from that day, along with a little friend I met along the way :)

And no…the snake isn’t dangerous :)

Until next time!
